The ideal material depends on the pressure, temperature and chemical aggressiveness of the process. In general, 316L stainless steel metal discs are the universal choice for non-corrosive fluids and temperature ranges from -196 °C to +450 °C. For highly corrosive media, exotic alloys such as Hastelloy® C-276, Monel® 400 or Inconel® 600 are used, which resist chlorides, strong acids and high temperatures. When corrosion is extreme or a fully hermetic seal is required, composite discs with fluoropolymer (PTFE, FEP) or impregnated graphite discs are used.
Key selection factors are: chemical compatibility (pH, halogens, oxidizers), pressure cycling, design temperature, applicable standards and operating cost. Choosing the right material extends service life and reduces unplanned shutdowns.
