In short: The TANKSERT is a composite rupture disc that is inserted into threaded or bolted safety vent assemblies on transport equipment: rail tank cars, ISO containers and road tankers. Its function is to protect the vessel against sudden overpressure from the liquid or gas it carries.
How it works
Mobile vessels carry vent devices that open if internal pressure rises from heating in the sun, from product reaction or, in the worst case, from fire exposure. A rupture disc in that vent works as a seal: it keeps the product contained and the vessel tight during transport, and opens only when the pressure reaches its burst value.
The TANKSERT is made to fit standard vent assemblies, which allows it to be replaced without modifying the vessel. Its construction is multilayer, as in other composite discs: one layer provides mechanical strength and another the seal, and the seal material is chosen according to the product being handled. It is offered in several pressure ranges and with different sealing materials.
A practical detail: in transport equipment the disc is subjected to vibration, temperature changes, and liquid surge during braking and cornering. That is why the selected burst pressure should leave sufficient margin above the normal peaks of the trip, so as not to cause unnecessary openings.
When it makes sense (and when it does not)
- Suitable for railroad tank cars, ISO-type intermodal containers, tanker trucks, trailers and other mobile vessels for liquids or gases.
- Suitable for fleets seeking quick replacements in the shop, thanks to its compact format.
- Suitable when a vent valve is to be isolated from contact with the product.
- It is not the option for fixed plant tanks or process piping, where discs with conventional disc holders are used.
- Not suitable to choose without reviewing the transport regulations applicable to the product and the container.

- Required nominal burst pressure and coincident temperature.
- Type and size of the vent assembly: threaded or bolted.
- Conveyed product, to select the seal material.
- Equipment type: rail tank car, ISO container or road tanker.
- Whether the vessel may be left under vacuum during discharge.
Each disc comes with a clearly visible flow-direction tag, which reduces installation errors and speeds up periodic inspection.
