In short: The SANITRX LP™ is a reverse-acting sanitary rupture disc for low pressure, designed for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food and beverage processes. It covers burst pressures from 10 to 150 psi in diameters from 1" to 3" and is ready for clean-in-place and sterilize-in-place service.
How it works
In a reverse-acting disc the dome points toward the process, so the pressure acts on its convex face and loads it in compression. When the burst pressure is reached the dome suddenly reverses and opens. Because the metal works in compression, this type of disc tolerates high operating ratios better than a conventional one; in this model the manufacturer recommends up to 90 % of the marked burst pressure.
The LP version is the low-pressure variant of the SANITRX family. According to the manufacturer, it retains the performance of the original model but with lower flow resistance, which is relevant when the pressure margin available for relief is small.
What makes it sanitary is the disc's environment: a standard 316L stainless steel body, SF1 internal finish of 20 Ra µin so that no residues are left, traceable USP Class VI certified gaskets free of animal-derived ingredients, and the ability to withstand sterilization at 130 °C. The manufacturer declares compliance with ASME BPE, USP Class VI and 3-A; it is advisable to request the corresponding documentation when validating the equipment.
When it makes sense (and when it does not)
- Recommended for tanks, sanitary lines, sterile filtration, bioreactors and food equipment where CIP/SIP is performed.
- Suitable when the process operates close to the set pressure, thanks to the 90 % operating ratio.
- Suitable as isolation of a pressure relief valve, in its non-fragmenting version, to reduce fugitive emissions.
- Not suitable above 150 psi or outside the 1" to 3" range; other sanitary models should be considered there.
- Not recommended in industrial processes without hygienic requirements, where a conventional disc solves the same problem with fewer finish and certification demands.
Data to specify it
- Burst pressure and coincident temperature, including the sterilization condition.
- Normal operating pressure, verifying that it does not exceed 90 % of the burst pressure.
- Nominal diameter and type of sanitary connection.
- Documentation requirements: finish, gasket traceability, certificates.
- If a non-fragmenting version or a fluoropolymer lining is required for very corrosive service.
