In short: the MINTRX® is a semicircular, grooved, reverse-acting disc that covers the intermediate pressure range of its family, between the STAR X™ and the ULTRX™. Its distinguishing feature is a set of patented asymmetric indentations that control how the dome reversal begins.
How it works
The disc has a dome that is mounted with the convex side toward the process. On reaching the burst pressure, the dome reverses and the metal opens along the groove, a controlled-depth score that works as a predefined “cut line”. The term semicircular generally means that the opening path does not go around the entire perimeter: it leaves an unscored portion that acts as a hinge and holds the opened petal in place so that it does not break loose.
The MINTRX®'s own contribution lies in the initiation. Instead of a symmetric indentation, it uses asymmetric indentations that force the dome to always start reversing on the same side. This gives a more predictable reversal and, according to the manufacturer, allows low burst pressures to be reached without losing accuracy. The factory scoring also helps the disc withstand fatigue better when the pressure oscillates.
When it makes sense (and when it does not)
- Suitable for chemical, petrochemical and general process services with medium or medium-low burst pressures.
- Suitable when an economical reverse-acting design is sought, suitable for static, cyclic or pulsating operation.
- Suitable when replacing discs in existing installations, since the manufacturer describes it as easy to integrate.
- Not suitable if the burst pressure is very low (the STAR X™ fits there) or high (ULTRX™).
- Caution: as a reverse-acting disc, it must be installed in the correct orientation and with the dome intact. A disc installed backwards can open at a pressure very different from the nominal one.
Data to specify it
- Burst pressure and coincident temperature.
- Normal operating pressure and variation pattern (stable, cyclic, pulsating).
- Fluid and concentration, to select the metal or alloy.
- Nominal diameter and the disc holder that will house it.
- Vacuum or back pressure conditions, if any.
A note on nomenclature: the source text places the MINTRX® in an “RX series”, while other datasheets from the same manufacturer refer to the TRX family. In practice it is the same group of scored reverse-acting discs; the exact designation should be confirmed in the quotation.
