Service life depends on the material, type of action (forward or reverse), temperature, pressure cycles and corrosivity of the fluid. In clean, static processes, a metal disc can last 5–10 years without problems. However, in cyclic or corrosive service, fatigue and thinning reduce its life to 2–3 years. ASME and API standards recommend an annual visual inspection and replacement after every activation. Using fluoropolymer linings or graphite discs increases chemical resistance, but all discs must be replaced when their residual thickness or appearance degrades, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
